Kiss + Tell: Kiss Your Excuses Goodbye - I'll Tell You How
by Christina Waschko
For many, many years I was the most goal oriented motherpreneur you can think of.
During my time as CSO (Chief Serving Officer) of my coffee shop Strawberry Lounge I created daily, weekly, monthly and yearly goals. Every week I competed with myself. Every week I wanted (and needed) to outperform my previous one.
The whole process was exciting and stressful at the same time. It was a rollercoaster ride influenced by the unpredictable spending habits of my daily visitors, the seasons, the weather, school holidays, bank holidays, the wellbeing of my children, travel plans by my husband etc.
I was driven to reach my SMART goals; day in and day out, week by week, month by month, year after year!
Let’s wind forward a few years: Today I’m running my video production company, Motherpreneur Productions, from the comfort of our home studio.
Today I don’t need to hit a certain monetary goal to cover at least my rent, to make payroll and to pay my suppliers. It gets even better: I ditched goal setting altogether!
Sometime last year I replaced creating and chasing my SMART goals with being guided by my vision!
Everything I’m doing today is geared towards the bigger picture, my vision.
Where do I see myself going with my video services? Whom do I want to serve? Where and what do I want to shoot? For me it’s travelling the world, shooting commercials and perhaps music videos one day!
Living with my vision feels so much better than any goals I ever set before!
For personal reasons I never use the word working! I prefer to use creating!
Creating towards a bigger picture is freeing! There is no stress involved! Seeing your vision clearly frees you up to go with the natural flow of life. It offers you more opportunities! Why? New opportunities are easily missed if we are focused on reaching a specific goal only! We don’t give ourselves permission to either see it or to say yes to a new path because it’s not ‘part of our plan’.
Our vision is the big prize so to speak. Here is how to create it:
Ask yourself, what is it I really want? Why am I doing what I’m doing now? Where do I want to end up? And most importantly, how will I end up living? Create a picture in your head. Create it as vividly as possible. Involve all five senses! Where are you? What are you doing? What are you wearing? What are you feeling? Who is with you? What do you hear? What can you taste?
Hold your vision! This is your big prize. This is what you are creating (working) towards.
Once you decide to make your vision your priority you free yourself from being a slave to daily, weekly or monthly goals. You are free to follow as many different paths that will lead to unforeseen treasures, new connections and new opportunities!
Give it a shot! Kiss Goal setting Goodbye and Say Hi to Your Big, Fat Vision! What do you have to lose?
