The Art of Entrepreneurship by Jason Torres One of the criteria that is non-negotiable when pursuing entrepreneurship is our ability to develop our courage muscles.
You may be asking, “why is that?” Great question! If you ask most entrepreneurs about their journey, you will come to the conclusion that only courageous people take on a journey that include many unknowns. If you are lacking in the courage area, that doesn’t mean that your entrepreneurial journey is over before it even got started. I believe it can be developed. Your follow up question is probably… “Jason, where do I begin to develop my courage muscles?” Another great question. Here’s my answer… Ballroom Dancing! Now, before you click on the close button, allow me to expand on my advice because I believe the story I’m about to share may resonate with a reader out there. I want to introduce you to my cousin, Brian Malebranche. Brian is like many individuals in their 20’s- he’s discovering what his passions are, he’s figuring out where he wants to devote his time, and what new skills can he develop. His journey has provided great moments as well as challenging ones. Journeys also provide what I call defining moments and I have to believe that’s what Brian experienced three months ago. Brian happened to be passing by his local dance studio and, apparently, something in the studio caught his attention and so he decided to, “check it out because it seemed like fun”. I think it’s important to note that Brian responded to his instincts as opposed to his inner critic that may have been telling him to keep walking. How many opportunities have we passed up because we listened to our inner critic. What was the result of Brian’s decision? Well, I was sent a video of his group performance just recently and, boy, was I a proud cousin! The group performance was great and I could absolutely see the fruits of their labor. However, what was more impactful than the performance was this thought- What if we went back to the scene three months ago. You remember the scenario right? Brian passed by his local studio, something caught his attention that led him to say, “that looks like fun, I should check it out”; but this time, he decided to keep walking because he listened to his inner critic that whispered, “Brian, who are you to dance? Get real and keep walking.” How many of us are allowing our own inner critic to hold us back from taking the stage in our own life and entrepreneurial journey? Brian is an example of what’s possible when we simply take a leap of faith and trust the process. Well done Brian!
