Laughter Thru the Tears by Paula Dezzutti Hewlette Every time you look at the calendar or listen to the radio or turn on your computer for news, you are cleverly reminded of what current day of celebration it happens to be. April alone has over 100 bizarre and unique holidays. It is National Humor Month, of course precipitated by April 1st with April fool’s Day. But it is also international Guitar Month, Keep America Beautiful Month, National Pecan Month, with weekly specials such as National Karaoke Week, Read a Road Map Week, Administrative Assistant’s Week, and the days we can’t forget of course: National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day Hug a Newsman Day, and Ex-Spouse Day. And then of course let’s not forget the big holidays; April is a hugely spiritual month honoring Passover, Palm Sunday and Easter. Because of nationally designated “daily movements” (no pun intended)that occur 365 days a year or more, I was asked to write a piece this week in honor of women’s equality in business and it occurred to me that I don’t know what that means! So I asked, “As it relates to what issues”? And by the answers I received I am left feeling like I don’t know what women’s equality issues are either. I mean I understand that there are issues that exist in the world for the treatment of women to be different than the treatment of men in many instances; that seems as obvious as the treatment of washing the colors separately from the whites. But it occurs to me that I am bad at doing laundry because I mix a lot of colors in with my whites. The other people in my house vehemently complain that I shouldn’t be allowed to do laundry. Now I certainly would never put bleach into the washer drawer when I mixed the colors with whites, but next time the whites seem a little dingy from the residue of the blue or especially the reds, I just add a double dose of bleach and make them all white again. Easy peasy pumpkin pie!
So who picks the movies you go to in your house? Who picks what’s for dinner? Who picks where you will spend Christmas? How about what to bring to the pot luck dinner? What about the shampoo you use in the shower? Or whether to shop at CVS or Walgreens? The women’s equality issues go on and on and on. Equality implies someone must judge; to impart value. Because I create, I know my value all on my own. And that can never be equaled by anything or anyone outside of me! So I declare this National “I ENTREPRENEUR EQUALLY MONTH”.
