On my radio show, It's Your Business, I've interviewed entrepreneurs who have great businesses and lately some of my guests have businesses that come from caring deeply about something that has affected their family and many others.
Annette and Larry Roof have a radically different take on business. Theirs is trademarking phrases they know others will want to use and will pay them a royalty to do so. They have a team of trademark attorneys that are on top of doing the updating of the trademark that is required. They don't make any product or sell anything. They have in the past owned retail businesses and have manufactured so they know about business. But this is entirely new. They've been doing it for several years and it's beginning to take off.
Why do this? Larry has twin sons who are autistic and epileptic. Annette's daughter was also autistic and epileptic. Annette's daughter has since passed. Most of the monies coming in go to create centers for children with autism and epilepsy and other diseases that affect children. There are models of the centers and contacts to make them happen. This is a business with a heart, doing good while doing business.
The second business is Purple Rose Candle. It's similar in that it also raises money and consciousness about epilepsy. Jessica and Ryan Jordan, owners of Purple Rose Candle have a daughter with epilepsy. They discovered that when a certain candle was lit it set off an epileptic episode. They looked into the ingredients and found that it used synthetic fragrances which were the trigger.
One night Ryan woke up and said to Jessica - we are going to make soy wax candles with real essential oils. Purple Rose Candle was born. They found which essential oils soothed, which invigorated, which calmed, and which seemed to trigger brain activity that could lead to a seizure. Essential oils are very different from fragrances which can have some harmful side effects.
Jessica and Ryan complied information on essential oils they share with people at malls and events. People began to tell them how epilepsy affected their family and their life. The business took on another aspect, a resource for people to get support and information and to know they are not alone.
Their business is growing. They now include bath balms with essential oils. The data they have collected is also growing and more people are using the information to improve their lives. Purple Rose Candle is a company that has huge heart. An example of a highly successful business doing good.
I invite you to see how your business can be successful and do good.
