by Karen Carter As the spring semester began I start part two of my classes and as I look back I have mixed feelings on this growth process. While I have improved in many areas I also lack in many areas but I am grateful the growth progress over power the areas of lack. When I embarked on the pathway of becoming a business owner I did not realize the many opportunities that would require speaking to the public. Just thinking about it boggles my mind, but at this point I can say I am gaining strength in this area. Fear of public speaking plague a large number of individuals so I’m not alone. I have come to realize the gift of public speaking is a trained technique required on almost every occasion as a business owner.
I began spring semester classes to study a particular subject(s) and there it is Public Speaking, an additional subject to be learned that’s included but not a chosen one. While I’m focused on the lesson being taught suddenly out of nowhere I am called on to speak in class. Oh my, where did the knots in my stomach come from and the overwhelming fear? My mind is telling me I must answer and I want to participate in class to demonstrate I am learning so my classmates and the Professor will see I am engaged. Much to my surprise I push pass the fear and the overwhelming stomach churning to a place I call “Just do it!” In a matter of minutes I was speaking publicly and sharing very valued information. I was shocked and surprised at myself. Once the first few words were spoken the remaining just seemed to roll right out of my mouth. I researched and have learned the fear of “Public Speaking” is real and I share the same fears as many others. As the desire to increase in the knowledge of Business Management there are many new aspects I wasn’t aware of when I signed up for this venture that are preparing me personally and professionally. As business owners/founders it is imperative for us to strengthen ourselves in every way possible. For me to overcome the fear of public speaking means I have to “Just do It!!” Take every opportunity to get in front of people and share my vision and business model. I will be speaking with supporters, vendors, volunteers, potential funders and community leaders to market our programs so that they spark their interests and convince how Infinite Hands Initiative can solve unsolved problems in the community and in the lives of underserved individuals. Research provide many valid articles on Public Speaking and the ways to overcome that fear but each of us possess our own learning tools inside and our own self-preservation techniques, for me facing the fear head on delivered the best results because in facing my fears I was not able to hide behind them but instead overcome public speaking so I can move on to the next fear (phobia) that lurks inside me.
