The search for perfection is a pretty interesting one.  I’m finished writing my book and I was feeling pretty good about it.  Then I went over the printed copy and even though I went through it at least six time before there were glaring errors!

So, I had some choices.  I could throw up my hands in disgust – that was my first thought! Or, I could go over it yet again and make the necessary changes. And keep doing that until it was as good as I could make it.

How do you handle the places where you haven’t done as well as you think you should?

All of us need to find a place where we accept that we might not be as perfect as we would like to be.  One of the hardest lessons, I think as humans is to accept our imperfections. Not only admit them but be okay with them. And not to feel bad about ourselves because of them.

We are works in progress, even the most brilliant of us. If you’ve ever read a biograph or autobiography of someone you greatly admire you see the places where they were imperfect.  Some very imperfect, indeed.  But, that did not detract from all that was wonderful about them. They were both, wonderful and flawed.

Often, we try to hide our imperfections.  We are ashamed of them and we don’t want people to think badly of us.

But, what if we were okay with the places where we don’t do well. If we could say to ourselves, “Yup! I really suck at that! But, you know what?  I’m learning.  However, I may never be good at this.  And, that’s OK with me because there are so many other areas of my life where I am brilliant!”

There is no order of importance in life.  If you are a great baker or mother or gardener it’s just as important, (in fact mothers are very important!) as someone who invents a labor-saving device or a cure for something.  Why?  Because each of these things that you can do enhance life for yourself and others.

This points to two things:  1) Stop comparing yourself with anyone else and 2) Stop demanding that you be perfect and great at everything!

The funny thing is, when we stop demanding so much of ourselves and take the pressure off we might be good at things we never even thought of before.  When we follow our natural genius we ae brilliant!  Not perfect but brilliant!

I offer this challenge:  Let yourself off the hook.  Let yourself be who you are.  Find the places in you where your genius lives and give it life.

My very best to you,
Dianne
