SUCCESS & INSPIRATION FOR ENTREPRENEURS

Thinking about the businesses I’ve created and owned I realized that I never wanted any of them to be scalable.  I created them because I thought they would be fun, I would enjoy them and they would add something positive.

As I listen to entrepreneurs now everything has to be scalable or, erroneously, it’s not considered a business. I don’t see many founders wanting to grow their business organically.  They all go after investment monies.  We have become a debt focused business economy.

I want to point out that there is another way to grow a business.  It can also be created for the joy of it rather than total focus on how big it can be and how it can be bought out by Amazon or similar.

I think it’s important that this current model isn’t the only one to consider when wanting to create and grow a business.

A book I received from a friend is a great example of the model I’m talking about.  The book is: Anything You Want ,by Derek Sivers, admittedly an older book but his is a great story.  And by the way, he eventually sold his company for 22 million dollars!

He began his business to fill a need he had for his music.  Other musicians liked what he was doing and asked to join in.  They did.  He made some wonderful mistakes which helped him to do it better and his company grew organically.  And, he never went to investors.  He didn’t need to.  This is a different model of business but it works. It also allows people to be more creative in the businesses they grow.  Tech is not the end all be all.  It’s wonderful.  It gives us so much but it is the servant even though now it is the master. We need more creative solutions and businesses built upon them. A truly creative person sees beyond limits and pushes them further.  They open new territory.  It is in the conception of the idea that it begins.  And for that there can be no perceived limits. The scalable model is about limits and structure.  We do need both. But that model is firmly entrenched.  We need this other creative model for balance.

There is freedom in this model. It certainly is something to consider.  Just saying.
You have choices about your business.  You do NOT have to follow the herd to be bigger, better, faster.  You can be original and find ways to do it that fit who you are and because of that your business will flourish but, more importantly, so will you.

My best to you,

Dianne
