Watching Oprah talk to her guests I thought about - what is the unique gift that each of us brings to life? Do we even think about it? My sense is that everyone is busy now finding something that sets them apart from the crowd. Creating a new business that is the next hot thing. Finding that something that makes them be seen as successful. And, that’s not bad at all. However, in the long run is that why we’re here? My dawning understanding is that we are only here to be ourselves. Just that. Every time we hold up an expert as the way for us to be or to follow we do ourselves an injustice.
We are not here to emulate anyone else no matter how successful they may be or no matter how much they are held up as the example of how to be. They are the best them they can be. But they are not you. You are not meant to be a reflection of them. Or of anyone else.
No one can tell you what you are meant to be. No book, no organization, no path handed down through generations. To find what you are here to do you need to pay attention to yourself. Which is something that must be done in quiet times. You cannot be rushing around every moment and pay attention. They are mutually exclusive.
If you really want to know why you are here and what you are meant to do you will find it’s all right there inside you. Your job is to clear away the noise and busyness to access it. There is no course you can take, not guru to follow, no predestined course of action. It is a question of clearing away rather than adding information.
But you will find it. You will recognize it. And, when you do you will feel more alive than you have ever felt. You will relax and your worries and fears will diminish. Also, the impostor syndrome that most successful people talk about will disappear. Because you will be home. You will be yourself.
By the simple act of being yourself, not to influence or teach anyone else, you will inspire and teach. You will give courage to others to try it for themselves. Not by what you say or write but by who you are. You are your legacy. You are why you are here. You are the gift to life. You are the inspiration for others to try it for themselves. And, that is more than enough.
The good news is that all you need to do is be yourself. The bad news is that all you need to do is be yourself - in a world that has programed you and keeps telling you otherwise. But the rewards are amazing and I know you can do it.
My best to you,
