Don’t’ assume you know why you are going to a place, meeting someone, reading something. If you do you might miss the underlying reason, the real reason you are where you and doing what you’e doing.

I had a great case in point this past weekend.  I had a meeting and for some reason I had an impulse to meet the person at a place I almost never go.  Didn’t think about it.  It just seemed right.

The meeting was not a huge success nor was it a disaster.  It was what it was.  There was not a really good interface between us and it was clear that it wouldn’t be a benefit to either of us to work together.  That happens and it’s part of being in business.  No biggie.

On the way in (it was Barnes & Noble) there was a long table with several authors doing signings.  That in itself was really unusual.  Any signings I’ve done have just been me.  That’s the usual signing – one author with many copies of their book to sign and promote.

This time there were about 6 authors at the long table.  I saw them on the way to my meeting in the café and I chatted briefly with a couple of them.  They were a fun group.  I was in my meeting for about an hour.  On the way out of the café I stopped at the table and spoke with an author I hadn’t met on my way in.

She was a delight to talk with.  We talked about the writing process and about writing groups.  She was interested but had 6 children so not a lot of time for regular group meetings.

I asked her why there were so many authors at this signing.  I told her about my book signings and that it was just me.  She explained that all of the authors were with one book publisher.

She asked about my books and I told her.  Then I mentioned one that I have been working on for several years.  She said I should finish it up and submit it to their publisher.  I asked for their info and she pointed next to her.  “There he is, “ she said.

I introduced myself to him and explained that I was cleaning up the book I had written and when I’d finished could I submit it.  He had been listening to our conversation and knew I had written before, at least that’s why I think he said to submit it in a couple of months.

And then it struck me – it wasn’t about my meeting with the person I’d met earlier.  It was all about getting my book finished and out there and that’s why I had been directed to go to the Barnes & Noble that had the book signing with the publisher present.

I couldn’t have planned it so well.  See?  You just never know! So pay attention to that nudge that tells you to do something you don’t normally do.  Could be just what you need!!

Check it out.  Experiment.  What happens when you pay attention to that small voice or idea that pops into your head.  What happens when you don’t.  Prepare to be amazed.
My best to you,
Dianne
