by Jason Torres The Art of Entrepreneurship In last month’s column of The ART of Entrepreneurship, I talked about the “Starving Artist” stigma and received great feedback on that article (See, You Are NOT Starving!). It’s interesting that a few weeks after I wrote the piece, a particular Facebook post would come through my newsfeed and serve as the inspiration for this month’s column. Before I get started, I want to allow you all the opportunity to read the post that came across my Facebook newsfeed because, if you can relate to this person’s words in any way, I believe it will fire you up. I want to leave you all with a few takeaways that I gathered from this person and their phenomenal post because this is a fantastic example of what it takes to become successful as an entrepreneur in the creative space:
One, I was inspired by the courage it took to write this and click that “post” button! I can tell you right now that there is someone out there who is in this person’s shoes that would love to express their frustration just like this person. But, they may have obstacles that are holding them back such as fear. Let me say this one thing about courage- It’s a quality that will NEVER, EVER go out of style and this person has it! Two, Let’s talk about these two words, “Real Job”: Let it be known that I will be doing a special article about this phrase, but for the purposes of this month’s piece, I’m going to say this- When it comes to the job of an artist or anyone in the creative space, their job is as REAL AS IT GETS. It’s my belief that if I were to give a person who has a “real job” a job description for what an artist must do- that person would most likely turn it back into me before they got to the middle of the page and go running the other way. Believe That! Three, In the, You Are NOT Starving! piece, I mentioned “sacrifice”, and if this isn’t the best example of the type of sacrifice it takes to make it in the world of entrepreneurship, then I don’t know what is. I honor this person for walking their talk. This person unequivocally has what it takes, including the three elements required to have a chance in this world: Skills, Habits and Mindset. If you’re an aspiring artist going through what this person has been going through, use this story as fuel to fire you up and continue to create. What you do is as real as it gets. Believe That! -JT
